So recently I went through my girls’ clothes. They had so many, their drawers were bursting and they still had a laundry basket full of folded clothes to be put away. Clearly we had too many. Lots of our friends have older girls who give us their too small clothes and we LOVE them for it! My girls love getting new clothes, especially when they are from people they admire and look up to. BUT! Sometimes we end up with too many, like now.
To help facilitate this minimizing, I whipped out a paper to help the kids. I kinda took the idea from the Kon Mari book of “Sparking Joy”, so I told them that everything was leaving and they needed to choose what they wanted to keep! I do love that idea. It’s much more positive and encouraging than choosing what you DON’T LIKE. You’re looking for the good!
Now, I’m not going to tell you it didn’t take long because I let my kids do it and it was shockingly difficult to decide which shirts they loved the most. I’m serious. Utterly serious. So, in reality, it took about an hour or so to go through everything…per kid… but totally worth it. I got rid of a big garbage bag per girl of unwanted clothes. It was amazing! It makes it much easier to get dressed in the morning now without having to wade through t-shirts and skirts!!
I redid this handy printable – it’s not beautiful, just functional. I actually laminated mine so the kids could mark it off with a dry erase marker. We routinely need to go through clothes so I thought this would save me time….maybe.
Now, of course, use your own judgement. We threw skirts in with shorts since my girls love skirts more than shorts anyways. I also allowed more dresses with my five year old because she loves them and wears them a lot. This isn’t an absolute! Just a guideline. I don’t like people telling me what to do either! lol
I do have one more piece of advice though. After you’re all done sorting through clothes and you got them bagged and boxed up, MOVE THEM! Get them out of the house! I have a terrible habit of leaving these half finished things – like de-cluttering projects – in the middle of the hallway. Of course, I do have bags of clothes sitting in the hallway at this moment. My goal is to get them out today. So take my advice and take it out as soon as you’re done or you’ll be like me and trip over them in the middle of the night when you’re trying to go to the bathroom. That’s no bueno.
Good luck!! Let me know how your clothes clearing works out and what works best for you!
